Another controversy erupted on Sunday at the 8th-Day Fidau prayer for the repose of the soul of the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi in Ibadan, Oyo State as the family allegedly turned back the State Deputy Governor, Engr Rauf Olaniyan at the gate of the Oluyole Estate house of the late former governor.

But spokesman for the family, Bolaji Tunji, insisted it was not true or intentional as the event was strictly for family members only.

Reports had it that the Deputy Governor, who was accompanied by the Commissioner for Lands, Barrister Abdurahman Abduraheem were harassed as they arrived the premises.

The reports had it that the policemen attached to the late governor’s house blocked the entrance and bluntly refused to let him entry.

And while the number two man was trying to make enquiries, the gun totting policemen became hostile and nearly pulled down the ADC to the Deputy Governor.

Engineer Olaniyan had visited the residence of the Ajimobis ahead of the state’s delegation for the fidau. A committee headed by the Head of Service, Mrs Amidat Ololade Agboola was said to have midwifed discussions with the Ajimobi family on the 8th day Fidau.

It was gathered that though the Ajimobi family gave its nod for the visit of the state government, government officials were surprised to discover a hostile environment on getting there with a number of policemen said to be unfriendly

But Mr Tunji in a statement said the event had started before the Deputy Governor arrived and nobody was aware of his presence. And besides, arrangement of seats was such that it strictly followed the COVID-19 protocols that didn’t allow more that 30 people for such gathering.

He explained that when it was made known that the Deputy Governor was around, an alternative place was provided for him and his entourage only to discover that he had left the venue.

The statement posted on his Face Book page read:

“There is the need to clarify the believed presence of the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan at the 8th day prayer of HE Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the immediate past Governor of Oyo State.

  1. The Deputy Governor arrived after the prayer had started. The event was strictly a family affair.
  2. There was a need to comply with the Covid-19 protocol as established by NCDC- Social distancing, not more than 30 people in a place and seats arranged, accordingly. After which the gate was shut.
  3. No one was aware that the Deputy Governor was coming as neither the advance team nor the protocol informed us.
  4. By the time we got to the gate to usher him into the sitting room, he had left. Everything happened within a spate of 10mins.
  5. Through a serving Senator and a former Attorney General we tried to get in touch with him that it was not to slight him and he could sit in a private sitting room provided by the family. Unfortunately, he had left. We however apologise to his Excellency.

Thank you.

Bolaji Tunji
